Compatibility and limitations

Camera Tool runs inside Unity Editor in Edit Mode and Editor Play Mode. It does not provide camera controls in a built game.

For a Unity 2022.3.52f1 project using Built-in rendering and the legacy Input Manager, follow the Quick Start and keep the limitations below in mind. Support for other Unity versions, including Unity 6, is not guaranteed. Contact support for guidance on your project’s configuration.

ConfigurationWhat you need to know
Built-inKeep Scene View available while using Camera Tool. Review the setup and restoration limitations below.
URPCompatibility is not guaranteed. Check with support before relying on Camera Tool in a URP workflow.
HDRPCamera following has a known compatibility limitation with the rendering callback used by the tool. Shader conversion or material changes do not resolve it.
Legacy Input ManagerCamera Tool uses the legacy Input API for activation in Editor Play Mode.
New Input SystemCompatibility is not guaranteed. If input errors occur, contact support with your input settings before changing the project-wide backend.

No third-party package, renderer feature, or shader installation is required by Camera Tool.

  • Setup needs an enabled camera. Add or enable a Camera on an active scene object before using either setup menu.
  • Store origins explicitly. Setup and camera reassignment do not capture a return pose. Click Store origin for each camera before restoring it.
  • Use the correct alignment control. The Inspector Enabled checkbox skips Match Scene to Game and Self align. Use the Scene View key for these options, or Align to origin to restore a slot directly.
  • Keep a saved scene copy. Undo is unreliable for setup, field edits, and origin actions.
  • Stop before removing the tool. Disabling its component or unloading its scene can leave the global active state set. Restore any needed poses while the tool is still present.
  • Use one tool instance. Multiple locked Inspectors can display or edit the wrong component.
  • Expect focus changes. The Scene hotkey can focus Game View even with the Game-related options off. Refocus Scene View before navigating if needed.
  • Configure camera optics separately. Following changes position and rotation, not field of view, orthographic size, projection, or rendering settings.

Camera references, settings, and origins are stored on the component. Save deliberate changes in Edit Mode. When working with prefab instances, check the camera references and poses after saving and reopening your scene.

Do not rely on Play Mode exit to restore a stored origin or retain Play-time changes. Unity can return the camera to its pre-Play pose instead. Use Align to origin when you need explicit restoration.

Keep Scene View and Game View visible side by side. If Game View input or focus is difficult to control, use Scene View for navigation and stopping. Use Scene View when Game View is paused, and stop Camera Tool before returning to gameplay input.
